ProMedica Names New CEO After Oostra Announces Retirement

ProMedica has tapped Arturo Polizzi to serve as its next chief executive.

The company’s board of directors unanimously confirmed that Polizzi will lead the not-for-profit health care organization in an announcement released Friday.

Current CEO Randy Oostra is officially retiring after 25 years with the organization on Monday, the company said. Polizzi was promoted to serve as president back in May when ProMedica announced a series of layoffs and company-wide restructurings.

Oostra, who has worked closely with Polizzi over the last six months as part of the planned transition, had previously discussed retiring with the board before the pandemic but decided to stay once the pandemic hit in March 2020.

His last official day will be Oct. 31, according to a news release.

“Serving ProMedica for the last 25 years has been the highlight of my career,” Oostra said in a statement. “Over the years, we have had the pleasure of working with so many dedicated caregivers, board members, and community leaders who have inspired our work daily. As part of ProMedica, I’ve also been grateful for the opportunity to connect with many incredible individuals as we have worked to address the social factors that significantly impact health outcomes. Together, we have made meaningful progress in the way health care is delivered. It has been a true honor and privilege to lead ProMedica and serve our communities.”

Oostra, who has been president and CEO since 2009, began his time at ProMedica as vice president at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in 1997. He also served as the president of multiple ProMedica hospitals and COO, as well as president of the health system in 2006.

Polizzi started his career at ProMedica in 1998 as an in-house attorney and most recently was the company’s COO starting in 2020. He has served in various strategic and operational roles at the organization, including associate general counsel, chief human resources officer and president of the metro Toledo ProMedica hospitals.

“I’ve worked closely with Arturo for many years, and I’m confident he will be an exceptional CEO for ProMedica,” Oostra added. “We have been working on a transition plan for some time, and despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, he is well prepared to continue moving the organization toward long-term financial stability and success.”

Polizzi is taking over at a time when the company is facing a series of operational and leadership headwinds.

ProMedica reported a $105 million operating loss in its senior care division for the second financial quarter of 2022. The Toledo-based company serves communities in 28 states with more than 330 skilled nursing centers, assisted living facilities, memory care communities, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, and hospice, home health and palliative care agencies.
