In this Voices interview, Skilled Nursing News sits down with Harold Landers, President & CEO, Rosie Connectivity Solutions, to talk about the strategies providers can use to overcome decreasing reimbursements and large payouts to staffing agencies to comply with minimum staffing. He also shares an outlook on the skilled nursing industry in the years ahead, and he explains how Rosie Connectivity Solutions is evolving to help providers navigate the changing landscape.
Skilled Nursing News: What past career experiences do you most draw from, in your role today?
Harold Landers: Today’s long-term care canvas is so broad and constantly changing that I lean on my past experience in dealing with “people” the most. Being able to relate to others and understand their needs is critically important today. Whether working with my team members at Rosie, helping them grow and become more assertive in their roles, or working on solutions that will help our customers provide care and medical intervention for our aging population, the common denominator, for me, has always been “people.”
In a challenging industry such as long-term care, we as leaders, must be passionate about what we do and always show compassion, for those individuals we lead and the customers we serve. At Rosie, every new product and every new service we offer always begins with the end user and the patient in mind. Therefore, if a product does not have the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others, then that product is not even considered to become part of Rosie’s offering. So, in summary, I always draw from my past experience with “people” in everything that I do.
Has Rosie made any major changes to its products over the years and, if so, why?
The key word is definitely “change.” There has been so much change in long-term care over the past several years that we’ve definitely had to make some changes along the way with our product, as well. Rosie has been serving long-term care, and specifically Skilled Nursing, for over 45 years now. Many long-term care centers were referred to as “retirement homes” or “rest homes” in the earlier days. However, with each passing year, those centers begin to evolve their level of patient care. The centers begin accepting higher acuity patients, thus performing much more like a hospital than a retirement home.
The most significant changes have occurred in the past decade with the increasing need and demand for technology. With Rosie’s focus on helping to impact the lives of others, we have committed ourselves to being flexible and embracing these changes. Our products and services become stronger daily, and our customers know that Rosie does not settle for mediocrity. We are determined to provide the best to those who give their lives and commitment to caring for our aging population.
How does Rosie fit in to the “everyday picture” of a skilled nursing facility?
With its all-in-one, easy-to-use mobile workstation (medical devices and software), Rosie helps to streamline the daily tasks of vitals capture and patient data documentation to where the clinician can handle most everything from the patient’s bedside. When clinicians use the Rosie workstation, their patient’s vitals are captured and documented correctly and immediately, and this means that providers have the necessary information that they need to be able to offer the proper treatment for the patient whether they be on-site at the facility or helping to care for the patient, remotely, through remote patient monitoring.
Exemplary patient care always begins with having patient data that is immediate (not stale), and it is also important that the caregivers be able to care for the patients more efficiently without them having to take on so many unnecessary extra steps which can cause them to become fatigued and discouraged in their role. This, as we know, only adds to the problem of employee turnover. Having Rosie in a facility creates a positive change from day one.
With challenges such as decreasing reimbursements and paying out huge dollars to staffing agencies to comply with minimum staffing, how can a facility budget for a solution such as Rosie?
At Rosie, we understand how painful the financial burden can be for skilled nursing centers. Therefore, we work in every way to help our customers save money. Proudly, we have some of the finest partners in the industry who also work to help ease the financial burden for those centers. Our customers can expect a healthier ROI by implementing the Rosie solution in their centers through improved efficiencies, happier clinicians (less employee turnover), better patient outcomes, decreased regulatory fines, and lower hospital readmissions. Decision makers should always consider these savings when budgeting for their center to bring aboard the Rosie all-in-one solution.
Is the Rosie solution something that a skilled nursing center “must have,” in your opinion?
Rosie’s solution provides, by far, the highest quality medical device technology with the best return on investment for any skilled nursing center. Therefore, this, alone, is one reason that Rosie is a “must-have.” However, even more, important would be the life-changing advantages it has for those on the front lines providing care for their patients and for the patients who, as we all know, deserve the very best in care and the very best chance for an improved patient outcome. Again, it always comes back to “people,” and this is what we work for the most at Rosie.
You have provided a lot of insight on change and with that it mind, what is next for Rosie?
Every day new products and offerings are entering the space of Skilled Nursing. With that in mind, I feel that it is essential for providers to focus on medical device technology that will help to make sure that they are capturing the “complete” picture of their patient’s present or changing condition. By capturing only one vital instead of a full set of vitals, for example, it would be challenging to offer a patient the appropriate level of care and intervention. As Rosie grows, we will continue to focus on delivering the full “scope” of patient data needed to offer the right level of patient care. We know that genuine patient care must include knowing their blood pressure, temperature, oxygen rate, pain level, respiration, etc. Without the full “scope,” it would be hard to provide the proper intervention. Therefore, we at Rosie will always work to provide an “all in one” solution for our customers. The new Rosie QUANTUM will be the easiest and fastest way to capture and document patient vitals. We are so excited about its upcoming release as our test centers have all had rave reviews.
In a couple of words, finish this sentence: In 2023, the skilled nursing industry has been defined by…
…adapting to change and maximizing every opportunity to improve the lives of those who care for their patients and, for the patients, the best possible outcome.
