ProMedica Lays Off 260 Employees Following SNF Deal with Welltower, Integra

ProMedica recently notified over 260 employees that they will be laid off in the coming months, as the company transitions 147 nursing homes to new operators.

The layoffs include 255 remote workers in regional and corporate support staff roles for the senior care facilities, and seven of the employees work in ProMedica’s senior care offices out of Toledo, Ohio.

These job cuts come in the wake of a recently realigned joint venture involving ProMedica, Integra Health and Toledo-based real estate investment trust (REIT), Welltower Inc. (NYSE: WELL). The initial partnership with ProMedica and Welltower was reconstituted as a joint venture between Integra Health and Welltower in December. Following this, ProMedica agreed to surrender its 15% interest in the 147-property portfolio, which Integra is subleasing to 15 regional operators.

“The majority of the affected positions provide a range of support services for the skilled nursing facilities, including sales, marketing and administrative,” ProMedica’s director of public relations, Tausha Moore, said in an email to Skilled Nursing News.

Moore said ProMedica contacted affected employees earlier this week to provide them with advance notice and proactively notified Toledo and Ohio officials of the job cuts.

“We empathize with the affected employees and are committed to assisting them through their transition,” Moore said. “We are encouraging them to explore possible open positions with the new operators. ProMedica’s human resources department is also working closely with affected employees to provide support during this process.”

More than 8,000 ProMedica employees have already transitioned or are in the process of transitioning to new skilled nursing facility operators, Moore said. She added that it would be premature to speculate about the possibility of any other changes that would affect the senior care division in the future.

ProMedica continues to operate non-Welltower leased senior care centers located in Michigan and skilled nursing and memory care facilities located in Ohio. ProMedica also operates a portfolio of private-pay memory care communities under the Arden Courts brand.
