American Senior Communities Taps Sava Alum as COO, Makes Other Leadership Changes

American Senior Communities announced Andrew Shane as its new COO Friday, amid several changes to leadership this week.

“As health care, and in particular, senior care continues to evolve and change, we are committed to bringing new innovations to our care programs, enhancing the quality of life for our residents and employees,” Donna Kelsey, CEO of ASC, said in a statement to Skilled Nursing News. “These individuals will collaboratively work with a full team of other strong leaders and together, we will continue to provide the highest level of quality care for our residents as well as expand our exciting career pathways for our employees.”

Shane comes to Indianapolis-based ASC from Sava Senior Care, where he served as division president. The now defunct Sava ceased to exist as a company after transitioning its last five nursing homes to other operators by the end of January 2023.

“Andy is a mission-driven leader with over 30 years of experience in health and senior care management. He is collaborative and inspires joy and fun in the workplace. We are truly fortunate to include him in the ASC family, and we look forward to his leadership,” Kelsey said in a press release.

Prior to Sava he served as COO of the Urban Division at Signature Healthcare.

At ASC, Shane will develop and oversee the strategic direction for ASC’s operations across nearly 100 communities, Indiana’s largest nursing home provider said. Shane specializes in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) process and has a strong commitment to quality customer service,

In other executive-level changes, ASC also assigned a new chief nursing officer (CNO). Alicia Sims has also worked for ASC for about 15 years, starting out as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), then serving as a registered nurse (RN).

“In this expanded role, Alicia will focus on developing strategies that enhance care, ensuring regulatory compliance and leading employee growth and engagement programs,” the company said.

Craig Kollen, who has been with the company for almost two decades, was appointed to the position of vice president of operations.

Kollen will continue to lead the Northeast region, while also providing mentorship and guidance to regional leadership in ASC’s North Central and North West regions.

CEO Kelsey told SNN earlier that she was keen to focus on recruiting staff, reducing turnover, getting steady leadership in every building and, in turn, boosting census. She also spoke of the difficulty of operating in an environment of a labor shortage in the sector, but being content at keeping things stable.

ASC has 90 skilled nursing service sites, some of which are on campuses with assisted living facilities or garden homes, and 12 standalone facilities, in addition to “growing” hospice and home health companies and a recent addition of palliative care services — all exclusively in the state of Indiana.
